The construction method outlined above imposes several constraints on the designer. The bottom plank is ply so it cannot have a compound curve. The ribs must all have the same shape so they can all be bent over the same form. If the curve of the bilge is made a circular arc and the bilge strips are all the same width, all the strips can be identical since their edges can be beveled to the same angle. Since each strip crosses all the ribs at the same angle it is not twisted, however this limits design choice over the shape of the hull ends, which are not as fine as in typical canoe designs.
